Russo-Ukrainian Conflicts

While many might even call it a war, Russian and Ukraine have conflicted since 2014. This started in 2014 when Putin ordered the Russian army to enter Ukrainian territory. This intervention involved the annexing of Crimea for the Russians. Ever since this conflict in 2014, there has been repeated fighting. With about 13.000 soldiers dead, both sides look to put a stoppage in the fighting ("Ellyatt"). Between Putin's Russia, and Volodymyr Zelenskyy's Ukraine, how will the two agree to stop the violence? After a meeting in Paris, France on Monday, the two countries have come up with a 3 step plan to cure their relationship. The first agreement is to come to a cease-fire by the end of 2019 ("Ellyatt"). Meaning that both countries' military in the Donbass area (the area where the fighting is happening) will let each other go. Hoping to have this done by March 2020 both countries have a lot of work to do. With this agreement, all prisoners of war/hostages...

Impeachment

As the 2020 presidential election approaches, Donald Trump has bigger problems than re-election. In the current impeachment trial, there are three main arguments. One being obstruction of justice, meaning he lied to the special counsel in written responses ("Bookbinder"). Lying to the special counsel gives them false information about the case, and also impedes the investigation, which is a federal crime. Therefore making the investigation more difficult. With this being a federal crime, this alone could get Donald Trump impeached. Another piece of evidence is Trump's goal to enrich himself while in office. With close to 2,300 conflicts of interest to benefit himself or one of his businesses, that shows an obvious use of power ("Bookbinder"). While this is wrong, he should not be making presidential decisions based on whether they would help him or his businesses. This type of conflict is discussed in the constitution stating that the president shall not rec...

Partisanship and Division

Partisanship and Division cause corruption and problems in our current government. These problems consist of representation, bias, and bad political habits. How can we fix these problems? and what will the fixes change? The main example of a flaw in public representation is how candidates get their money. With the wealthy having more money to spend, some choose to serve as a funder for political candidates. Many of them fund large amounts of money to political parties or specific candidates. In many cases, we don't get to see many candidates because they don't make it to the general election because of the limited funding they are given. This gives the wealthy a power in government meanwhile this power is simply inaccessible to lots of the population. With the United States having a population of 311 million, only about 144 thousand give candidates funding. With that being close to .05% of the population, it's obvious that the other .95% is not represented ("We the P...

Voting Participation

Voting Participation in the United States In our current American society, participation in voting is significantly lower than it should be. In 2018, only about 49% of legal and eligible adults went to the ballot and voted. In 2016, only 60% of eligible adults used their right to vote. Why're people not voting? What can the government do, to get more citizens to participate in the voting process? The electoral college is a burden to the participation of many Americans. The impact that the electoral college has on the election, causes many Americans to think that their vote does not have an impact. While this strategy did a good job for the founding fathers, It's duty doesn't seem as necessary now that our country is more educated and populated. In upcoming and future elections, the popular vote of the citizens should determine who is pronounced the president of the United States. In the 2016 election, Hillary surpassed Donald Trump with about 2.9 million votes, which ma...
